Intro
If you were immersed in the dubstep scene around the 2008-2011 years, there is no doubt that you’ve heard the infamous YoY or Yoi bass in countless tunes. Doctor P was always using a slight variation of this sound especially in his classic “Sweet Shop” This sound below here
Since it’s such an iconic sound it’s time for a tutorial on how to create it oh and by the way it is incredibly easy to create. Massive is still an absolute power house for bass all these years after it’s release, so load up Massive and let’s get into it!
First thing’s first, well make sure Massive is in its Initialised state so at the top, click ‘file‘ and ‘new sound‘
Next we’ll change oscillator 1 to ‘Sin-Square‘
Heading down to Insert 1, we’ll turn it on and select “Sample & Hold“
Increase the Dry/Wet to the maximum value and change Pitch to the maximum value
Now onto the filter. We’ll select the ‘Scream’ filter from our list of options and then turn the cutoff all the way down
Heading over into 5 LFO, well do the following steps to make sure our settings are the same as the ones above
Turn Sync on
Change the Ratio to 1/4
Click Hold and Drag the top curve (sine wave) to the right slightly
Next, well click the arrow shape on ‘5 LFO’ (shown at the bottom right of the image above) this is creating a modulation path so our next click we do needs to be the destination. So the next click will be on the first open box of the cutoff filter (top right of the image)
Once the modulation mapping is set, Click, Hold and drag up on the 5 to increase the range of modulation (so the green is covering the whole parameter)
And lastly increase the ‘Scream’ and ‘Resonance’ to their maximum values. And that is the iconic sound!
If you’d like a faster or slower ‘Yoi bass sound,’ head back into 5LFO and change the ratio from 1/4 to anything else, you’ll quickly hear how the ratio changes the speed to get your desired sound!
Another classic is switching the Scream filter to the Lowpass 4 Filter. Try it out 🙂
