ANTIDOTE’S TOP TIPS FOR WRITING SPOOKY MUSIC

Writing spooky music for some of us can be quite hard and definitely out of our comfort zone when it comes to producing.
Don’t worry! We’ve assembled some top tips to help give you a hand to making your tracks extra spooky.

1. Start with a Minor Key
Major keys tend to sound bright, happy, and playful — great for a summer bop, but not so much for something spooky. Minor keys, on the other hand, instantly add a darker, more emotional tone.

For Halloween vibes, though, go a step further and try the Harmonic Minor scale. It adds a unique twist by raising the 7th note, giving your melodies that eerie, tense, almost haunted feeling. Regular minor is good… but harmonic minor is spine-chilling.

2. Use Dynamics to Build Tension
As tempting as it is to squash everything with compression (hello sausage waveforms), spooky music thrives on contrast. Use dynamics intentionally — let parts of your track breathe, get quiet, then hit hard. The sudden shift between soft and loud sections helps create tension and suspense, perfect for catching your listeners off guard.

3. Add Vibrato or Tremolo to Your Leads
Ever noticed how horror film strings often use tremolo or vibrato?
That shaky, uneasy motion keeps the listener on edge. You can do the same in your track:
Try adding vibrato (pitch movement) or tremolo (volume movement) to your lead sounds. In Serum, just map an LFO to the Fine Pitch or Level of your oscillator and tweak the rate to get the desired effect. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference in creating an unsettling atmosphere.

4. Leads & Organs
Classic horror films love their organs and glockenspiels — and for good reason. Organs bring a dark, church-like tension, while glockenspiels add a childlike eeriness that feels just off.

To craft a spooky organ sound, try stacking chords, adding a bit of detune, and layering with heavy unison for that rich, wobbly texture.
For pluck-style leads, keep things sharp and snappy: a defined transient and a clean, bright body will give you that eerie, bell-like tone that cuts right through the mix.

5. Arpeggiation & Repetition
Think Psycho’s stabbing strings or the slow, ominous build of Jawsrepetition is suspenseful. Repeating short, sharp notes keeps listeners on edge, especially when paired with creepy intervals.

Try running a harmonic minor melody through an arpeggiator set to 1/8th notes. Keep it tight, mechanical, and insistent. With the right synth, it can sound like the ticking of a time bomb… or a monster creeping closer.

6. Extra Spooky Sauce (Bonus Tips)
Here are a few extra tricks to dial up the creep factor:

  • Sub Drops: A classic film trick — use a sine wave sub and automate the pitch downward for a heart-sinking effect. Great for transitions or shock moments.

  • Pitch Automation: Bend certain notes in your lead up or down by a semitone (+1 or -1) for that uneasy, out-of-tune flavor.

  • Big Impacts: Huge, cinematic impacts can make your transitions hit harder and feel more theatrical — like a jump scare in audio form.
